Canada, US and Netherlands join forces against hacking and the resale of digital identities
The FBI and Europol announced the closure of Genesis Market, one of the key Dark Web sites dedicated to hacking and the resale of digital identities. Through a joint operation with the Canadian and Dutch authorities, 2 alleged administrators of this illegal market were arrested and several servers were seized.
Hacking and the resale of digital identities are criminal activities that cause financial losses and irreparable damage to many people around the world. Genesis Market was one of the most active sites in this area, with nearly 400,000 claimed users and over 120,000 publications.
The authorities worked together for several months to gather evidence against the alleged site administrators. This included infiltrating the network and buying sensitive information to prove the suspects' guilt.
The announcement of the closure of Genesis Market is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between different police and investigative agencies. Canadian, Dutch, American and European authorities have joined forces to combat hacking and the resale of digital identities.
In total, the strikes led to 119 arrests and 208 searches with the participation of some 25 law enforcement agencies supported by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
This operation is a clear warning to other criminals who seek to exploit the vulnerability of computer systems. Investigators have shown that they have the skills and resources to track down cyber criminals and bring them to justice.
