Social networks: the sector is doing better than ever
Users are spending less time online these days. According to the latest report from We Are Social, the average time spent online has fallen by 2.2 % and on social networks by 2 %. Despite this, the number of users continues to rise, with growth of 2.1 % on the Internet and 3.7 % on social networks.
In terms of devices, the use of smartphones rose slightly (+0.8 %), while that of personal computers (-3.4 %) and tablets (-7.8 %) fell.
The number of social network users has grown considerably (+3.7 % in one year) to reach 4.88 billion. Of these, 46.4 % are women and 53.6 % are men. On average, users spend 2 hours and 26 minutes a day on social networks.
The main reasons for using social networks are :
- Keep in touch with friends and family (48.6 % of users).
- Passing the time (37.3 %).
- Reading new stories (34.6 %).
- Find content (29.8 %).
- Keeping abreast of trends (28.4 %).
Worldwide, almost two out of three people use the Internet
More and more brands discovered on social networks
The report reveals that 5.19 billion people will be using the Internet in July 2023, representing 64.5 % of the world's population. In France, 92.6 % of the population use the Internet. However, 92.6 % of South Sudanese do not have access to the Internet, making it the country with the highest rate of non-connection, with the exception of North Korea where the Internet is banned.
On average, users spend 6 hours and 40 minutes a day on the Internet worldwide, while in France the average time is 5 hours and 25 minutes a day. The vast majority of users (95.3 %) access the Internet via a smartphone, while only 63.4 % use a computer.
Social networks have become a major source of discovery for brands. According to We Are Social, they are now the third most important source of discovery, after search engines and TV advertising. Around 27.7 % of internet users aged 16 to 64 say they discover brands through advertising on social platforms.
Of all the platforms, Instagram is the most effective, with over 62 % of users saying they use it to research future purchases or view branded content.
Some interesting figures:
- 59.2 % of users use the Internet to find information.
- Google Chrome is the most widely used browser, with a market share of 62.58 %.
- Google is the most widely used search engine, with a market share of 92.64 %.
- The most visited website in the world is google.com with 88.1 billion visits per month, followed by youtube.com and facebook.com.
